Governor Jimmie H. Davis

James Houston Davis was an American singer and songwriter of both sacred and popular songs who served two nonconsecutive terms from 1944-1948 and from 1960-1964 as governor of his native Louisiana. In 1940 Davis wrote and recorded the American classic, “You Are My Sunshine”. He also scored a No. 1 hit single while he was governor for the song “There’s a New Moon Over My Shoulder” In 1999, “You Are My Sunshine” was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award and named it one of the Songs of the Century.
